NUSTARS is an undergraduate student organization at Northwestern University dedicated to participating in university-level NASA competitions such as University Student Launch Initiative and the Battle of the Rockets Competition, to educating and inspiring members of the school and the local community about STEM-related fields and topics, and most of all, to promoting aerospace, space technology and exploration, and space-related careers. NUSTARS seeks to fulfill this mission by competing in various programs and initiatives through many teams listed below, engaging local middle-school students and community through our Education & Outreach program, and by advocating STEM, especially aerospace-related fields, at Northwestern-sponsored engineering and club fairs.
Its members are comprised of a diverse group of students in various interdisciplinary fields from Mechanical Engineering to History, who are passionate for aerospace, rockets, and pretty much anything space-related, and want to work on high-level science projects outside of classroom setting. We seeks to provide an inclusive environment where we provide resources and mentorships to one another, while also pushing one another to excel in their endeavors and given fields.
*The Microgravity team, which participated in the Reduced Gravity Education Flight Program, has been discontinued for the time being due to recent NASA budget cuts and has been replaced with the new RASCAL team, which will participate in NASA's Revolutionary Aerospace Systems Concepts - Academic Linkage (RASCAL) Space Engineering Design competition.
NASA Student Launch Team is comprised of 4 subteams which work together to compete in the NASA Student Launch competition.
Midwest High Power Rocketry Team's goal is to train new members the basics of rocketry and to successfully compete in NASA’s Space Grant Midwest High Power Rocket Competition.
Near Space Exploration Team's goal is to launch weather balloons to conduct scientific experiments in high-altitude settings as well as compete in various competitions including NASA's CubeSat Launch Initiative.
RASCAL is a new, up-and-coming team focused on investigating research topics related to space exploration and competing in NASA's Revolutionary Aerospace Systems Concepts - Academic Linkage (RASCAL) Space Engineering Design competition.
The Education & Outreach team, comprised of members from all other teams, seeks to inspire next generation STEM leaders by engaging local middle-school students in workshops and class lessons.
